چکیده

Article history: Received 5 September 2006 Received in revised form 7 November 2006 Accepted 22 December 2006 Available online 15 February 2007 Composite indicators (CIs) have been widely accepted as a tool for performance monitoring, benchmarking, policy analysis and public communication in various fields. To a large extent, the usefulness of a CI depends heavily on the underlying weighting and aggregation schemes. In this paper, we propose a mathematical programming approach to constructing composite indicators. The proposed approach uses two sets of weights that are most and least favourable for each entity to be evaluated and therefore could provide a more reasonable and encompassing CI. We apply the proposed approach to develop a CI for modeling the sustainable energy development of eighteen APEC economies and present the results obtained. © 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Constructing a Composite Index of Risk in the Banking Sector: A Multilayer DEA Approach (Case Study: Tehran Stock Exchange Member Banks)

Risk analysis is necessary for portfolio management. Investors in setting an appropriate portfolio need to pay attention to risk-related indicators as well as profitability. Beside soft approaches for composing indicators to an index such as AHP, the optimization approaches such as DEA are also considered. However, if the indicators have a hierarchical structure, then it is no longer possible t...

Data-driven weights and restrictions in the construction of composite indicators

Composite indicators are increasingly recognized as a useful tool in policy analysis and public communication. However, if poorly constructed, they can send misleading policy messages. Perhaps the most difficult aspect of constructing a composite indicator is choosing weights for the components. The categorization of Croatian territorial units for development policy is based on the value of the...

Manufacturing Cell Configuration Considering Worker Interest Concept Applying a Bi-Objective Programming Approach

Generally, human resources play an important role in manufacturing systems as they can affect the work environment. One of the most important factors affecting the human resources is being an interactional interest among the workers in the workshops. If the workers in a manufacturing cell have the highest surface of the interactional interest level, it causes a significant raise in coordination...

Fuzzy Goal Programming Model to Rolling Performance Based Budgeting by Productivity Approach (Case Study: Gas Refiner-ies in Iran)

This research presents a mathematical model for performance-based budgeting and combines it with rolling budget for increased flexibility. The model has been designed by Chebyshev's goal programming technique with fuzzy approach. The parameters or coefficients of the model are derived by measuring the productivity of the organizations considering eight criteria. Data for calc...
